ODC 22 IS JUN 1-3 - SAVE THE DATE!

Mark your calendars now and get ready to participate in ODC 22! Your President, Kaley Fought, AIA, and a team of member volunteers are working with staff to make sure this years’ program is a truly hybrid experience, available for in-person attendees and those who can join us online, connecting us all as we reconnect, LINK, and think about the future in architectural design and practice.

The theme for ODC 22 will be LINK. The word link means a relationship between two things or situations, especially where one thing affects the other; such as "investigating a link between pollution and forest decline." Here, we will explore how architecture links us in everyday life – to each other, to our surroundings, and to the environment, for example.

Architecture sets the stage for the storytelling of our lives. The foundation, the structure of our community lives in and around the physical form. We want to know - how do we expand understanding of the links in the built environment affecting practice and outcomes for clients through case studies and presentations of creative solutions to our pressing issues:

  • Climate / Resilience /Forest Fires / Materials

  • Houselessness

  • Connecting Urban / Rural spaces and context

  • Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging in Architectural Practice

  • Pipeline Development

Your conference planning committee is working very hard to select a great speaker line up and we are hoping for great attendance. Make sure you don't miss it!

Halprin Sequence recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects

Halprin Landscape Conservancy, recipient of the 2020 AIA Oregon College of Fellows Award, announces that the Halprin Sequence has been recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects for its unique, lasting contributions to design and urban life.

January 25, 2022 (Portland, OR) – The four interconnected public spaces and pedestrian pathways in Southwest Portland known as the Portland Open Space Sequence, also known as the Halprin Sequence, are the recipients of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2021 Landmark Award. The award, which honors the enduring influence of distinguished landscape architecture projects, is a testament to Portland’s reputation for world class parks that elevate community engagement and design. Previous winners of the Landmark Award include Chicago’s Millennium Park (2020), the J. Paul Getty Center (2017), and the San Diego River Improvement Project (2011).

Originally designed as part of an urban renewal effort, the Portland Open Space Sequence was one of the most successful redevelopment projects of its era. At a time when inner city development prioritized places to work, shop, and park, Lawrence Halprin and Associates used architecture, art, and landscape design to create an urban space that encouraged Portlanders to engage in civic life.
