The AIA Conference on Architecture and Design 2024 took place last week and wrapped up this past weekend. More than 10,000 design professionals and academics attended the annual conference held this year in Washington, DC.

Keynotes

There were three keynote talks this year. On June 6th, #1 New York Times bestselling author and happiness expert Arthur C. Brooks spoke on the theme of “Build the Life You Want.” June 7th followed with “Designing for Health & Safety” with CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. And finally, on June 8th, “Storytelling & Representation” with Academy Award-winning designer Ruth Carter.

Business Meeting Voting Highlights

ELECTED OFFICIALS

Three new leaders have been elected to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors to serve terms beginning on December 13, 2024. 

•    Illya Azaroff, FAIA as 2025 President-elect/2026 President; 
•    Joshua Flowers, FAIA as 2025-2026 Secretary; 
•    Matthew Toddy, AIA as 2025 -2027 At-Large Director.

BYLAWS:

Membership Suspension: Passed
Passed with the rewording of the amendment from “shall automatically” to “may” suspend membership.

RESOLUTIONS:

Inclusion of Additional Underrepresented groups in AIA’s Strategic Plan: Passed

AIA Conference Virtual Attendance Options: Rejected

AIA Health & Wellbeing Policy: Passed

Governing Body Amendments: Passed

Awards Gala

On Friday June 7, AIA hosted AIA Awards Gala to announce the highly anticipated project-based award winners for 2024. For the first time, AIA will celebrated all award winners, including new AIA Fellows at one inclusive event. Three AIAO member firms projects were recognized: Index by Fieldwork Design received a Small Project award; Lakeridge Middle School by Mahlum Architecture received an Educational Facility Design award, and the PAE Living Building by ZGF received a COTE® Top Ten award.
