COMMUNITY DESIGN CENTERS

Center for Public Interest Design The Center for Public Interest Design is a research and action center at Portland State University that aims to investigate, promote and engage in inclusive design practices that address the needs of underserved communities worldwide through work that is socially conscious, environmentally sustainable and economically accessible to all.

Community Design Collaborative (Philadelphia) The Community Design Collaborative provides pro bono preliminary design services to nonprofit organizations in greater Philadelphia, creates engaging volunteer opportunities for design professionals, and raises awareness about the importance of design in revitalizing communities. 

Detroit Collaborative Design Center A multi-disciplinary, nonprofit architecture and urban design firm at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture dedicated to creating sustainable spaces and communities through quality design and the collaborative process.

ASSIST Inc. An independent nonprofit Community Design Center founded in 1969 by the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Utah and the Utah Society of the American Institute of Architects.

Rural Studio An off-campus design-build program, in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at Auburn University.

Studio 804 A not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation committed to the continued research and development of sustainable, affordable, and inventive building solutions. The University of Kansas Department of Architecture offers this comprehensive education opportunity.


YOUTH PROGRAMS

AFO - Architecture in Schools The Architects in Schools (AiS) program aims to ensure that future generations are exposed to the importance of design and creative problem solving by bringing design and building professionals into the classroom to create a unique and engaging experience that introduces third through fifth grade students to the basic principles of design over a six-week residency.

Elso - Experience Life Science Outdoors Elso’s mission is to teach and frame STEAM and nature based education through a lens that centers and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, individual needs, and lived experiences of Black and Brown communities.

Girl’s Build Girls Build™ is a non-profit organization based in Portland, OR, inspiring curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building. We currently empower girls in Southern Oregon, Portland, the Oregon coast.

Girls Inc. PNW In partnership with schools throughout Portland, Seattle and SW Washington, Girls Inc. PNW focuses on holistic youth development. Participants learn to value their whole selves, discover and develop their inherent strengths, and receive the support they need to navigate the challenges they face.

Eureka Girls Inc. Eureka! is a 5-year STEM magnet program for 8th – 12th grade youth, that empowers them to see themselves as an important part of the future workforce.

Amara H. Pérez, PhD Amara works with community groups, direct service organizations, public schools, institutions of higher education, architecture, planning, and design firms, and philanthropic foundations to practice Critical Race Theory (CRT) in planning and design. 

CRT offers an innovative equity approach to planning and design. Built environments are often delinked from efforts to advance racial and social inequity. Presumed racially neutral, matters of the physical and material world have been rendered invisible and driven by colorblind practices that ignore the intricate relationship between race and space.

Arnstein’s Ladder of Citizen Participation Sherry Arnstein, writing in 1969 about citizen involvement in planning processes in the United States, described a “ladder of citizen participation” that showed participation ranging from high to low.

Campaign Zero Funds donated to Campaign Zero support the analysis of policing practices across the country, research to identify effective solutions to end police violence, technical assistance to organizers leading police accountability campaigns and the development of model legislation and advocacy to end police violence nationwide.

Growing Gardens PDX Growing Gardens is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, started in 1996 in Portland, Oregon. They use the experience of growing food in schools, backyards and correctional facilities to cultivate healthy and equitable communities.
