Climate Adaptation and Resilience at Bhutan's First Law School
Presented by Cory Hawbecker
Principal, Holst Architecture
For attendees interested in the intersection of climate resilience, building technology, and culture, this presentation will share the process for creating an energy-efficient building (75% below baseline) in the Kingdom of Bhutan, held to compliance with rigorous traditional design aesthetics, while merging local materials, traditional local artisanship, and modern construction technologies. Bhutan is particularly vulnerable to climate disruption and as a society is aggressively moving forward with mitigation and adaptation strategies. This presentation will describe the relevant history, context, climate, and culture in which the project was developed, and share strategies and lessons learned during the design and construction of this ground-breaking new project.
The Nick Fish: Raising the Bar for Affordable Housing
Presented by Josiah Henley
Senior Associate, Holst Architecture
The Nick Fish sets a new standard for quality affordable housing and services in Portland. Refined in collaboration with the community and in response to a uniquely challenging four-sided site, the design features active ground floor uses to encapsulate surface parking, a two-story retail and office volume scaled to match the height and character of the neighborhood, and a six-story residential tower strategically fronted on Gateway Discovery Park. To support equity in the community, the 52 affordable and 23 market-rate units are designed to the same high-end finish and are interspersed throughout the tower. The building houses the new headquarters for the nonprofit Our Just Future and an active retail edge provides space for local BIPOC businesses.
