Sequitur Winery
1 AIA LU|HSW
In the Willamette Valley outside Newberg, Oregon, Sequitur Winery sits between wetland meadows and forested hillsides that are perfect for winemaking in a region that has become a culinary destination. Originally a dairy farm, the barn at the heart of the historic property has been transformed into a cathedral for winemaking. Constructed in 1937, the original barn was restored and elevated to ensure a new life as the ‘soul of the winery.’ Inspired by this historic construction, an array of new structures surrounding the barn are made from timber felled, milled, and fabricated on site. Together, the campus of buildings expands the legacy of an historic farm and creates a sustainable future.

Principal
Chris Brown is an architect working at the intersection of landscape, material, and craft. Raised in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and trained at the Fay Jones School of Architecture, Chris has worked with Marlon Blackwell Architects, Allied Works Architecture, and co-founded Linden, Brown Architecture, now Observation Studio in Portland, Oregon. Brown’s work ranges across multiple typologies: residential, hospitality, civic, and cultural.
The connective thread of Brown’s practice is the relationship between the careful looking and conscious building that are at the heart of his approach to architecture. Brown’s work marries the subtle and the rustic, the narrative and the formal, all with the belief in transformative generosity. His architecture is influenced by a deep understanding of the possibilities of place, a profound reverence for material and craft, and deep respect for community and culture.
He is the recipient of Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard award, multiple AIA awards, an Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design award, multiple Residential Design Awards, and has been featured in publications like Dezeen, Nuvo, the Design:ED Podcast, and more. Chris also teaches graduate design studios at the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Environment, serves on design juries, and is a member of the Professional Advisory Board at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.
