DDS - Home Hardening: The Role of Building Materials in Wildfire Mitigation

1 AIA LU|HSW

A presentation on the Wildfire Prepared Program by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS). This program comprises of a series of science-based mitigation measures proven to reduce wildfire risk to structures. The presentation will detail the development and current implementation of Wildfire Prepared in California and the success of a similar program created by IBHS to reduce impacts from severe storms currently being used in the south east.

Learning Objective 1:
The state of wildfire threat and the target of IBHS mitigation measures

Learning Objective 2:
Landscape and design choices for existing properties to increase resilience of existing structures

Learning Objective 3:
Considerations and best practices moving forward to design with wildfire exposure in mind

Learning Objective 4:
Community level planning/ lessons learned - how can we step up wildfire preparedness to the next scale

Evan Sluder
Research Engineer IBHS

Evan Sluder is a Research Engineer at the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety, where he leads and supports several projects investigating fire behavior and building material performance to wildfire exposures. Evan holds a B.S. and a M.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park.

With 4 years of experience in fire research and 3 years of experience working as a practicing Fire Engineering Consultant, Evan has a holistic understanding of construction and fire risk. Currently Evan is focused on developing a method to evaluate material performance to exterior fire exposures and understanding the driving factors of urban conflagration.
