What does a climate-friendly community look like?
This session will provide examples of the types of development that would meet the new state Climate Friendly and Equitable Communities (CFEC) rule, for smaller as well as larger cities. Members of Oregon’s urban design community will walk through a number of existing and proposed urban design elements that would create a more dense and walkable community than might otherwise occur, which is the state’s intention in creating the rules. These proposed communities will complement older similar neighborhoods and are a critical component of Oregon’s efforts to significantly reduce transportation related GHG emissions and create communities more accessible to all potential residents. One of the issues that surfaced in the LCDC rulemaking process was a lack of understanding about exactly how these rules would be carried out, and how the affected areas of a city could be developed or re-developed. This session will provide some real-world examples of how these areas can be developed in concert with their surroundings while meeting the state’s climate and equity objectives.
