Life Cycle Assessment & Tally

The Tally® Life Cycle Assessment App is a Revit plugin that allows architects and other building professionals to conduct Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using BIM as part of standard architectural practice. AIA Oregon is really excited to present this cooperative effort with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that should allow for the pilot use of an exciting new design tool.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a critical methodology that can be used by building designers to evaluate the climate impact of their projects. Building design professionals are invited to join this training for an overview of LCA and how it is used within a typical design workflow. Through live demonstration of the LCA tool, Tally® , participants will gain the skills needed to calculate the environmental impacts of a building project. Instructors will walk participants through the interpretation of a Tally® report and how it can be used to meet LEED credit requirements. Instructors will also share case studies that highlight how Tally® can be used to inform real-world design decisions, with an emphasis on carbon reduction.

The course includes a free license for the Tally® tool for one year. Licenses are limited to two per firm. There are 50 licenses available in total, so these workshops will fill up quickly. To get the license, you have to attend one of these three workshop trainings offered by Building Transparency. The other workshop are July 14 and August 4.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn to evaluate the environmental impact of building materials through the use of life cycle assessment (LCA)

  2. Learn to utilize industry tools to conduct an LCA for a building project

  3. Learn to interpret and communicate results from an LCA

  4. Learn how an LCA can be used to meet the requirements of the Whole-Building Life-Cycle Assessment credit of LEED v4 and v4.1

Instructor Bios

Vaclav Hasik, Ph.D., LEED AP

Vaclav Hasik is a Program Manager at Building Transparency, a non-profit organization behind the EC3 Tool and Tally. Vaclav works on methodology, data quality, and LCA research supporting both tools. Vaclav was previously a sustainability analyst and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) expert at Urban Fabrick, where he managed projects pursuing LEED certification and helped design teams address embodied carbon through whole-building LCAs. Vaclav also worked as a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was involved in university-wide carbon accounting, sustainability planning, and research on data and methods for LCA of buildings. He is an active member of the Carbon Leadership Forum and a founder of its San Francisco Bay Area hub. He frequently presents in professional educational sessions and trainings, at national and international conferences, and has been a guest lecturer in graduate-level courses at Harvard and Boston Architectural College.

Kelsey Rose, P.E., LEED AP

Kelsey Rose is the Tools Program Manager at Building Transparency. In this role, Kelsey will support and manage the nonprofit’s efforts to develop free and open-access tools that enable the industry to address embodied carbon’s role in climate change. Prior to joining Building Transparency, she served as an Associate at Magnusson Klemencic Associates, where she focused on lowering the carbon impact of the built environment through her work as a structural engineer. With this previous experience, Kelsey brings a unique perspective to the nonprofit’s team to further support its efforts to manage, evolve and scale its programs and tools to support the global industry. Kelsey holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, where she also received her Bachelor’s in Science.
