The University of Washington Behavioral Health Teaching Facility
A New Comprehensive Integrated Care Model
1 AIA LU|HSW Available

Presenter: Carl Hampson, AIA, Design Principal
SRG Partnership, Portland, OR

The University of Washington has established a bold vision for a new Behavioral Health Teaching Facility that will become the foundation for positive transformation of the entire Behavioral Health system in the state of Washington.

Designed as a fully integrated welcoming and healing environment for individuals struggling with both physical and behavioral health problems, the building will also become the home for an interdisciplinary training focused on preparing and supporting the next generation of health care providers for Washington State.

This presentation will provide an overview of the creative collaboration between clinicians and designers to develop an innovative facility that will support a new model of care.  Carl Hampson, Design Principal with SRG Partnership, will share an overview of the exploratory process and the innovative design solution that will establish a new benchmark for behavioral health.

Attendees will be able to understand the organizing principles and special considerations critical in the design of safe environments for mental health patients, clinicians and support staff. Attendees will gain insight into the complex design and planning challenges the design team worked through while operating in a virtual studio environment. Attendees will be able to see specific details and applications of Behavioral Health Design that had to be incorporated into a new building design.

  • Attendees will learn how the integrated relationship between interior and exterior environments through a behavioral health lens can contribute to patient recovery and healing.

  • Attendees will understand the historic stigma associated with mental health, how that has been traditionally in built form (sometimes with ill effects) and how this new facility will contribute to de-stigmatization, healing, and greater integration with society for its clients.
