Digital Design Series - Beebe Skidmore Architects

Stud Wall vs. Concrete Block - Two Recent Projects
1 AIA LU|HSW Available

Beebe Skidmore will present two recent Portland projects, both 2020 AIA Oregon Citation Award winners: House on 36th, and St. Johns Studio. Both are reboots of existing structures, undertaken at the same time, but each exhibits a somewhat different design attitude and outcome. The architects will discuss planning, architectural strategies, and detailing for both projects; attendees will be able to compare and contrast the two projects and ask questions about the decision-making and other project challenges.

Heidi Beebe and Doug Skidmore established Beebe Skidmore Architects in 2007 in order to work collaboratively as creative partners, bringing together design skill and project management expertise as equally shared disciplines. The practice has completed numerous commercial and residential projects for clients seeking unique, and sometimes quirky, design character and unexpected architectural solutions.

Heidi and Doug lead a small staff in handling eight to ten projects at a time from their newly renovated studio located in north Portland. Roughly half of their projects are ground up construction, and half are adaptive reuse, renovation, or re-imaginings of existing buildings. Their work focuses on smart, efficient planning and compelling, sharp details, with an emphasis on finding the artistry inherent in each architectural commission. Current work includes a co-living duplex on an infill lot in Northeast Portland and master planning and facility design for a rural art center on the Oregon coast.

Beebe Skidmore has been the recipient of several design awards including AIA Oregon and NW Regional Honor Awards for Swift headquarters in Portland’s Slabtown neighborhood. Their projects have been featured in Architectural Record, Dwell, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Heidi holds an M. Arch from Princeton University and Doug holds an M. Arch from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Both have been visiting critics and lecturers at schools of architecture around the US.
