Project 1: Inflection Point. MArch students Satoru Igarashi, Katherine Martin, Josymar Rodriguez, and Matthew Stoll from the UO’s Portland Architecture Program will present their “Inflection Point” project for the Housing Relief Studio, UO Portland Architecture Program, Justin Fowler, instructor (Winter, 2020).
Developed in a Winter 2020 graduate studio at UO's Portland Architecture Program, The Inflection Point is an affordable housing proposition for NE Portland that argues for a Green New Deal program of decarbonization that does more than just the 'less bad'. This prototype employs an adaptable framework that integrates modular housing, energy and water infrastructure, and an accessible landscape to provide social, recreational, and productive amenities for the residents and broader community.
Project 2: Biblioteca Caminanza. Team: Claudia Monroy-Benitez and Lindsey Naganuma from the Future Library Laboratory Studio, University of Oregon, School of Architecture and Environment, Instructors Clair Stone and Sophia Austrins with Bora Architects.
A library is a public place for people to learn together. With rapid access to information and more platforms to create, people will need to lean on future libraries to process and preserve more work. As access to this information becomes more of an expectation rather than an opportunity, people will need a space with the equipment to tap into the digital world.
Biblioteca Caminanza is located in neighborhood on the outskirts of northeastern Portland, Oregon. The library challenges the traditional way people learn, process and share information by redefining the library and shifting away from institutional power dynamics to move towards a partnership with the people. Biblioteca Caminanza represents the future library as a tool for equal opportunity and upward mobility within the community. the library amplifies the voices of the public, especially those that have been ignored creating space to tell stories, support one another and explore Cully. The design of the library focuses on areas to build, gather, and learn. By providing access to the necessary equipment, technology and community these resources foster a safe place to grow the diversity and education of the Cully people together.
About the Students:
Inflection Point:
After working in the field of brand design for many years, Satoru Igarashi had decided to pivot his career by finding an outlet which can provide more meaningful and improved experiences through design. Hence he enrolled in the MArch track 1 program at the University of Oregon and has just completed his second year.
Katherine Martin is a graduate of Georgia Tech and worked for two years in one of the largest firms in Atlanta. To further her knowledge on passive sustainable design strategies and experience a different side of the country, she chose to continue her education at the University of Oregon. When not in the studio, Katherine is either conducting research with the IHBE lab or taking full advantage of the mountainous hiking trails of the PNW.
Josymar Rodriguez is an March II student at The University of Oregon in Portland, a Fulbright Scholar and a 2017 Young Leaders of the Americas Fellow. She is the co-founder of INCURSIONES, an architecture studio and social initiative in her hometown Caracas, Venezuela.
Matthew Stoll is a human-being, maker, and designer focused on creating positive social impact through space. After 4 years of working professionally on radically-adaptive reuse projects in the historic urban center of his hometown of Cincinnati, he returned to Portland for his love of trees, food, spatial justice design, and good urban places.
